hair tissue mineral analysis
Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) is a biochemical test that measures mineral and heavy metal concentrations in hair samples. It is used in nutritional, environmental, and toxicology studies to assess long-term mineral status and exposure to toxic elements.
How It Works
- A small sample of hair (typically 1-1.5 inches from the scalp) is collected.
- The sample is washed, digested with acid, and analyzed using ICP-MS or ICP-OES.
- Mineral levels reflect long-term exposure (weeks to months) rather than immediate blood levels.
